The city of Antelope began in the late 1800s and was home to railroad workers. Over time, it began to grow as more folks came to the area. However, Antelope remained a small suburb of Sacramento for a number of years as town growth stagnated. On April 28, 1973, there was a large explosion at a switchyard close to town. A railcar, filled with bombs for military aircraft, blew up. The result was that nearly all the town was wiped out, however no lives were lost. There are a number of shops and stores for residents and visitors in the center of town including a spa, hardware store, bank, cleaners, restaurants and more. Another popular place for locals to shop is the Summer Hills Plaza Shopping Center, which is just a few minutes away from Antelope.
